During the colonial era the Red Kampot Pepper was Cambodia's leading food export. It was the export king until until 1975, when the production was reduced to almost nothing and it was replaced with rice. It wasn't until about 30 years later that smaller farm families started producing this pepper again and bringing it back to life. The Red Kampot pepper is also the first Cambodian pepper to be given a PGI status (Protected Geographic Indication).
